Local San Diegan Receives Accolades at Moondance Film Festival

The Moondance International Film Festival has announced that Alan Ames and Associates and their client Mr. Christophver R of San Diego, California are finalists in this year’s stage play competition for Mr. R’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet entitled, MERCUTIO, THE KING OF CATS.

Mr. R, a long time resident of San Diego, presented a World Premiere staged reading at the San Diego Repertory’s Lyceum Theatre in late March of this year. It is currently being adapted as a screenplay, at the request of individuals from the Hollywood film industry.

Alan Ames and Associates has announced that a major production of the stage play is also in development and will be mounted in a major theatre in late 2005 or early 2006.

Mr. R is the founder of Indian Magique, an improvisational comedy and theatre company which originated in San Diego; and later performing at Comedy Stores throughout San Diego and Los Angeles; and various television series in the 1980’s.

Indian Magique became the foundation, and Mr. R a founder, along with Sam Woodhouse, and others of the current San Diego Repertory Theatre Company. These efforts nurtured and gave birth to Whoopi Goldberg’s first live theatre performances prior to her discovery, and the one woman show which took her to Broadway, ultimately launching her meteoric film career.

Mr. R currently resides in San Diego where he produces, directs and writes for various local theatre companies. He also founded the San Diego All-City Free Shakespeare Festival, producing and directing eighteen full length Shakespearean
productions and earning the title of the Joe Papp of San Diego, from Sam Woodhouse of The San Diego Rep.

"I am pleased and pleasantly surprised at the attention currently being focused on MERCUTIO, THE KING OF CATS, and look forward to its realization on the silver screen in the not-to-distant future", Mr. R stated at a recent press conference.
